How to calculate a salary hike

New CTC = current CTC × (1 + hike % ÷ 100). A 30% hike on ₹8 lakh is ₹8 lakh × 1.30 = ₹10.4 lakh.

Hike % = (offered CTC − current CTC) ÷ current CTC × 100. Going from ₹8 lakh to ₹11 lakh is a (11 − 8) ÷ 8 = 37.5% hike.

Why your in-hand grows less than your CTC

A bigger CTC means bigger PF contributions and, once your gross salary crosses ₹12.75 lakh, income tax. A 30% hike from ₹12 lakh to ₹15.6 lakh, for example, raises monthly in-hand pay by only about 21%. Compare offers on monthly in-hand pay, and check the fixed and variable split — a performance bonus isn’t guaranteed.

What’s a good hike in India?

Annual appraisals usually bring 5–15%, depending on the company and your rating. When switching jobs, 20–40% is common and more is possible for skills in demand. Negotiate on the fixed pay, and ask whether joining bonuses or ESOPs are counted in the CTC you’re quoted.
