CTC (cost to company) is everything your employer spends on you in a year. Some of it never reaches your salary account: the employer’s PF contribution goes to your EPF account, and gratuity is paid only when you leave after five years of service.
From what’s left — your gross salary — three things are deducted every month: your own PF contribution (12% of basic), professional tax (set by your state, up to ₹2,500 a year) and income tax (TDS).
Income tax under the new regime, FY 2026-27
Salaried people get a ₹75,000 standard deduction. Taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays no tax thanks to the Section 87A rebate — so a gross salary up to ₹12.75 lakh is tax-free. Above that, the slabs are: up to ₹4 lakh nil, ₹4–8 lakh 5%, ₹8–12 lakh 10%, ₹12–16 lakh 15%, ₹16–20 lakh 20%, ₹20–24 lakh 25% and above ₹24 lakh 30%, plus 4% health and education cess. Surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh.
The new regime is the default. If you’ve chosen the old regime with deductions like 80C and HRA, your tax will differ — check with your employer’s payroll team or a tax advisor.
Comparing two offers
Compare in-hand pay, not CTC. Two offers with the same CTC can differ by thousands a month depending on how much is basic, whether PF is capped and whether a variable bonus or gratuity is counted in the CTC. Ask HR for the salary break-up before you accept — variable pay that depends on performance isn’t guaranteed.
This is an estimate for planning, not tax advice. Your payslip may differ because of variable pay, employer NPS, meal cards or other components.
