How notice period buyout works

Buyout = (monthly salary ÷ 30) × days of notice not served. With ₹60,000 a month, a 90-day notice and 30 days served, you owe 60 days × ₹2,000 = ₹1,20,000.

Your offer letter or HR policy says which salary is used. Most companies use basic pay, some use gross, and a few divide by 26 working days instead of 30. Some let you set off unused earned leave against the notice, which reduces the days to buy.

Who pays the buyout?

Usually it is deducted from your full and final settlement. If that isn’t enough, you pay the rest. Many employers hiring for urgent roles offer to reimburse the buyout — ask for it in writing in the offer letter. A reimbursement from your new employer is taxed as salary.

Tips for negotiating an early release

Hand over your work early and offer a written transition plan. Companies often waive part of the notice when your replacement is ready. Get any waiver or early relieving date in writing, along with your relieving and experience letters.
