How to resign in India, step by step

1. Check your notice period in your offer or appointment letter — 30, 60 and 90 days are common. It usually starts the day your resignation is accepted or submitted on the HR portal.

2. Tell your manager first, in person or on a call, then send the letter by email the same day so there’s a dated record. Many companies also ask you to submit it on their HR system.

3. Agree your last working day. If your new employer needs you sooner, ask for early release. Companies may let you adjust unused leave or pay a notice period buyout — usually your basic (or gross) pay for the days you don’t serve, depending on policy.

4. Hand over properly. Document your work, transfer open tasks and return company assets. It’s what people remember when they’re asked for a reference.

5. Collect your documents:relieving letter, experience letter, full and final (F&F) settlement and Form 16. Your next employer’s background check will usually ask for the relieving letter.

What not to put in a resignation letter

Keep it short and positive. Complaints about your manager, salary or colleagues don’t belong in the letter — raise them in your exit interview if you want to. You don’t have to name your new employer either.
